about

I've been thinking a lot recently about Full Fathom Five... we had some great times and some massive screw ups over our six years. It's almost 20 years since the end of FFF so as bit of a celebration I've be working on a two volume retrospective collection. I've done this for me and the lads, but if anyone else likes it, then that's great too.

This is volume one, covering the years 1994-1996. The songs are pretty much in chronological order in which they were written (from my memory, which is not the most reliable!).

Save Me, It and Toffee Apple were recorded at the United Sound room at the Eldon Centre in Barnsley. United Sound was a community music project which I ran for Barnsley Community Education Services. Recording was done using Richard Holmes' mobile studio. Not the greatest recordings, but I've done my best to remaster them to sound reasonable.

Tracks 4-7 make up the 'Day Away' EP recorded at Underground Sound, Wakefield, with Nev Barker at the controls. Track 8, Slinky Sam was recorded at the same sessions, but not included on the original EP.

Tracks 9-11 were recorded back at United Sound, on the Corridor Arts mobile studio, with me at the controls. We had limited drum mics and I didn't really know much about recording drums back then, so not the greatest drum sounds ever...sorry Andy.

One of the great things about doing this project is hearing how we progressed as a band. Me and Andy became a really tight rhythm section and you can really hear the progression in Guiser's guitar playing from the basic pop-punk of Save Me to the Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) like wall of sound on Something Inside.

Cheers,
Martyn
